Hotel rooms are designed to provide guests with comfort and convenience. If you have an extra room in your home you want as a dedicated guest room space, draw inspiration directly from hotel designs used over the years.
Consider these four guest room features that really stand out. Then, when planning a remodel ahead of time, you have an easier time implementing the ideas first, instead of expensive changes in the future.
1. Fold-Up Beds
Guest rooms and hotel rooms on the smaller size save space with fold-up beds, also known as Murphy beds. With a frame built into the wall, a lot of the room space is wide open when a bed is folded up into the wall. With a bed up in a wall, a guest will have space to sit at a desk, use a laptop computer, or watch television in a chair instead of laying on the bed.
Easy pull-down beds provide a space to sleep at night. When a guest is not in the room, keep the bed in pristine condition when locked up into the wall. The fold-up bed design also makes it easy to vacuum or sweep the bedroom floor.
In some rooms, you may have the space for a standard bed and a fold-up bed. The multi-bed option is ideal for guests who have children. The adults can stay in the permanent bed while a smaller pull-down bed provides a location for children to sleep.
2. Coffee Bars
Give a house guest a small area to store their own drinks and snacks. Many hotels feature a coffee bar, and you can do the same. A coffee bar should feature multiple outlets and possibly a small sink for easy water access. As you remodel a room, install outlets and plumbing in the small coffee bar area.
A small pantry with a countertop can hold a coffee maker or a mini-fridge. If a guest gets thirsty in the middle of the night, they can easily access the coffee bar without feeling rude for going into the kitchen and possibly waking others up.
Right before a guest comes to visit, restock the coffee bar and fill a mini-fridge with their favorite beverages.
3. Walkout Doors and Balconies
If guests stay for longer periods of time, then they may want to come and go from the house as they please. As you remodel a guest room, consider an exit door. A secure door acts as a private entry to the home and can feature secure locks and thickness like a regular front door. Many hotels have doors that exit right out into the parking lot.
If the guest room is on the second floor, then consider an extension of the room with a balcony. A walkout balcony can overlook the property and provide a private outdoor space for guests to enjoy. If needed, contractors can build an outdoor staircase that leads up to the balcony and provides a guest room entry point.
4. Room Themes
A renovated guest room is an open canvas for you to decorate and design. Many hotels feature theme rooms, especially at family resorts. Decide on a room theme to incorporate into the design. Floating shelf installations provide ideal locations to place décor as part of a theme.
When you consider themes for the room, look at elements you need for the room. For example, if you choose a nautical theme and want matching boat lamps, then you want to have proper outlets for the room. If you want specialty lighting to highlight decorations, then contractors will wire lighting and switches for the room.
With the base elements installed, you can add themes and create a fun room for your guests.
